What Is BPM and Tap Tempo?

BPM stands for beats per minute — it's the standard measurement of musical tempo. A song at 120 BPM has exactly 120 quarter-note beats in one minute. Knowing the BPM of a track is essential for syncing delay effects, setting reverb pre-delay, building loops, and DJ mixing.

How Tap Tempo Works

Tap tempo measures the time intervals between your taps to calculate the tempo. The tool averages your recent taps using a weighted algorithm that favors the most recent intervals, giving you an accurate BPM reading that stabilizes as you tap along.

• Tap along to the beat of a song — at least 4 taps for a reliable reading
• The more you tap, the more accurate the result becomes
• If you stop tapping for 3 seconds, the tool automatically resets
• Use the spacebar for faster, more natural tapping

From BPM to Delay Time

Once you know the BPM, you can calculate tempo-synced delay times using this formula: Delay (ms) = 60,000 / BPM

This gives you the quarter-note delay time in milliseconds. From there, divide or multiply for other note values:

• 1/8 note — Half the quarter note value. Tight rhythmic delays
• Dotted 1/8 — Quarter note x 0.75. The classic "U2" delay sound
• 1/16 note — Quarter divided by 4. Adds thickness without obvious echo
• Triplet — Any note value x 2/3. Creates a swung, shuffled feel

Accuracy and Consistency

The accuracy meter shows how consistent your taps are by measuring the standard deviation of your tap intervals. Lower deviation means more consistent timing. Professional musicians typically tap within 2-5% variance of the actual BPM. If your accuracy is low, try tapping along to a more prominent element like the kick drum or snare.
