LUFS vs dBFS Explained

These are two fundamentally different measurements that serve different purposes in audio production.

LUFS (Loudness Units Full Scale)

Measures perceived loudness over time, weighted to match human hearing (ITU-R BS.1770). This is what streaming platforms use to normalize your music. Three types:

  • Integrated LUFS — Average loudness over the entire track (the number platforms care about)
  • Short-term LUFS — Loudness measured over a 3-second window
  • Momentary LUFS — Loudness measured over a 400ms window

dBFS (Decibels Full Scale)

Measures the peak signal level relative to digital maximum (0 dBFS). This tells you how close your signal is to clipping, but says nothing about perceived loudness.

  • Sample Peak — The highest sample value in the digital signal
  • True Peak (dBTP) — The actual peak after D/A conversion, accounting for inter-sample peaks. Always use True Peak for mastering.

Why LUFS Matters More

Two tracks can both peak at -1 dBFS but sound wildly different in loudness. A heavily compressed EDM track at -6 LUFS and a jazz recording at -18 LUFS might both peak at -1 dBFS. LUFS captures the difference that your ears hear.

What LUFS Should I Master To?

The answer depends on your genre, target platforms, and artistic intent. Here is a practical decision guide:

Identify your primary platform. Most streaming services target -14 LUFS. Apple Music targets -16 LUFS. Podcast platforms prefer -16 to -18 LUFS.

Consider your genre norms. EDM/Pop masters often land at -6 to -9 LUFS (pre-normalization). Jazz and classical benefit from the dynamics at -14 to -20 LUFS.

Decide: loudness or dynamics? Mastering to -14 LUFS preserves the most dynamics but may sound quieter on platforms that do not normalize up. Mastering louder (-8 to -10 LUFS) means compression but no volume reduction on most platforms.

Always respect True Peak. Regardless of LUFS target, keep True Peak at -1.0 dBTP or lower to avoid distortion from lossy encoding (MP3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis).

Trust your ears. Use LUFS as a reference, not a rule. If your track sounds great at -11 LUFS, that is your target. The meter is a guide, not a governor.

How Streaming Normalization Works

When you upload a track, streaming platforms analyze its integrated LUFS and adjust the playback volume to hit their target.

Normalizing Down (Turn-Down)

If your master is louder than the platform's target, it gets turned down. A track mastered at -8 LUFS on Spotify (-14 LUFS target) will be reduced by 6 dB during playback. You spent effort making it louder, only for the platform to undo it.

Normalizing Up (Turn-Up)

If your master is quieter than the target, some platforms will increase volume. Apple Music and Spotify (when the user enables "Loud" mode) can normalize up. However, not all platforms do this, and normalizing up with a quiet master can increase the noise floor.

The Key Insight

Since platforms will turn loud masters down anyway, crushing your dynamics for loudness gains nothing. Instead, you lose dynamic range, transient detail, and punch. Master for quality, not the loudness war.

Why Dynamic Range Matters

Dynamic range is the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of your mix. Here is why it is the secret weapon in the streaming era.

The Loudness War Is Over

Before normalization, louder tracks appeared louder in playlists, creating an incentive to smash limiters. Now, with LUFS normalization, all tracks play at roughly the same volume. The loudness advantage is gone.

What You Gain from Dynamics

  • Punch and impact — Transients hit harder when there is contrast between loud and quiet moments
  • Clarity — Less limiting means less harmonic distortion and intermodulation
  • Musicality — Dynamics convey emotion. Verses can breathe, choruses can explode
  • Better codec performance — Lossy encoders (AAC, OGG) handle dynamic material more gracefully than brick-walled masters

A Good Target

Aim for 6-10 dB of dynamic range (LRA) in modern pop/electronic music, and 10-15+ dB for acoustic, jazz, or classical genres. Use the loudness penalty calculator above to see the actual impact of your mastering level.
